Chapter 32

I’d thought to return Peter’s jacket before he left for work the next morning, but he’d already left and locked his bedroom by the time I came out. It had been damp from my wet blouse, so I’d used a hairdryer to dry it, and then by the time I was done, his room was already dark. He must have been tired. For the past couple of nights, whenever I couldn’t sleep and then went to the kitchen for some warm milk, I’d seen his light still on from underneath his bedroom door and faintly heard him talking on the phone. Maybe working for a family business wasn’t as easy as I’d thought.

I brought the jacket back to my room and laid it on my bed. Sighing, I caressed the material gently before grabbing my bag and heading out to work. Well, call me crazy for liking him, unreciprocated, but I can’t lie about my feelings.

My phone buzzed as I locked my apartment door. While walking to my car, I took it out and checked who had texted me at that hour. Looking down at it, I saw two texts: one from Lena and one from Aunt Amy. Debating which I should read first, I decided to read the text from my aunt first.

Rory, I’m leaving Baja in two days, but I won’t fly back to Boston. Instead, I rerouted my flight to John Wayne Airport so I can stay with you for a night. Wouldn’t that be OK?

I sighed. My aunt still wanted to meet Peter. Thank God Peter didn’t mind my sharing his secret with her. I texted her back.

Yes, Auntie. Tell me your flight number, and I’ll pick you up.

Before I forgot, I texted Peter to let him know about my aunt staying for a night.

A minute later, Peter replied. Not a problem.

Then I flicked to Lena’s message.

Rory, the witch, wants us to finish the reconciliation reports. Are yours done?

I frowned and replied to Lena.

It’s not even the fourth week of the month…why is she rushing? We’ve been busy preparing for the WW team, and I’ll have a meeting with Vy today after lunch, for an hour or so. That lady is really something!

In less than a minute later, I got her response.

I’ve told you she is crazy! Just do what she wants, or she is going to accuse me of something ridiculous. Did you know that she accused me of laughing at her and the WW team at the introductory meeting? CRAZY BITCH!

I couldn’t agree more! Exhaling loudly, I yanked the gear stick in reverse, backed out of my space, and then shifted it into Drive and rolled slowly toward the exit gate. It was not going to be a good day among Lena, Rowena, and I. Lena had already been throwing tantrums since last week, and now I was upset too.
